SHED. BREATHE. FEEL.

"In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." -John Muir

There is something undeniably serene about being by yourself in nature. It's something that I tend to forget as I get wrapped up in my usual routines. Though I frequently crave and long for that feeling, I rarely have the time to actually get myself out in the depth of nature. Living in Los Angeles makes it a bit difficult to feel a sense of solitude, unless I'm in my bedroom; curtains drawn, candles lit. The confines and boundaries of painted walls, a concrete foundation, and the shelter of a roof separate me from the natural world. As a society we are flooded by a constant shower of florescent light while our bodies are forced into cubicles, cars, chairs, and clothing. These modern gifts afford us a comfortable lifestyle that is undeniably wonderful and completely necessary. However, it is so important to remember, as humans, we are innately bound to the Earth. Each time I step into an untouched portion of Earths landscape I have an overwhelming feeling of wonder and amazement. The weight of everyday encumbrances that tether me to the rhythms and schedule of daily life are instantly stripped away.

I was well over due for a date with Mother Earth. The freshness and magic of the forest was beckoning me, I was more than happy to accept the invitation. My wild spirt never turns down an opportunity to roam among the sticks.  Of course, I wanted to take my lady friend along for this magical ride. It doesn't take much to create magic when I'm with my darling yogi goddess. This particular wilderness excursion was of the extra magical sort. The combination of our energies in the Redwood forest gave life to an indescribable feeling that was magically uplifting. It was magical. Did I mention that it was magical?

To stand as tall and confident as a Redwood among the Redwoods created a feeling John Stinebeck related to so beautifully ~"The Redwoods once seen, leave a mark, or create a vision that stays with you always. No one has ever successfully painted or photographed a redwood tree. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. It is not only their unbelievable stature, nor the color which seems to shift and vary under your eyes, no; they are not like any trees we know. They are ambassadors of another time."

As my palms and body were pressed tightly against the bark of these trees I felt the heart beat of the Earth. An age old tune. The steady earthy pulsation of a distant drum. It connected me to something far greater. These tall, strong, confident ancient ancestors connect me to my more natural state. An unabashed unapologetic fearlessness of nakedness and unconditional self love. Complete liberation.

For the entire afternoon the forest was transformed into our own private estate, a comforting living space. We sang, sprawled, danced, meditated, whispered, lounged, embraced, reveled, marveled, relaxed, released, emoted, giggled, frolicked, picnicked, and played our way through the day.

The days last rays of sunshine were filtering through the canopy above, it created such rare sunlight. There was barely a suggestion of blue beyond the soaring treetops. Such a sight can only be compared to a cathedral with walls and ceilings made of stained glass art. I stood in the sun spot soaking in the last moments of sunlight. My bare body, completely cuddled by warmth exuding from the light. Every ounce of negative feelings I have ever had for my body had been released in that moment.  I no longer felt like a compilation of flaws. No one was judging me. The trees weren't judging me, I wasn't judging me. I felt free, beautiful, and an infinite amount of love. A feeling and state I wish to be in at all time; total freedom and uninhibited joy I hope everyone can feel that way. All the time.

We had effortlessly nested into this special and magical nook of the Redwood forest, leaving took far more effort. It was hard to part with those strong and statuesque Redwoods. As we started our process of packing, I gazed around and it looked as if a piƱata of brightly colored confetti and clothing had burst open in an explosive celebration. Everything had scattered right on the earths fern covered floor. The time had come to collect and gather our belongings. Reality was sinking in, we had to put our clothes back on, after all we couldn't just come stumbling out of a ticket of Redwoods in our half naked state. I get it, life isn't a nudist colony, clothing is appropriate. But, come on, there is just way too much uptight energy surrounding the human form. Body image issues plague far too many in todays society, mainly due to seriously unrealistic beauty standards. Airbrushed, flawless, slim bodies, which are perpetuated by the media, are continually creating unnecessary negative body-image issues. Beauty doesn't fit a mold!

As I was picking up the pieces strewn about the mulchy redwood carpet, we had just spent all day rolling around on, I couldn't help but feel sad and slightly conflicted. Humans have been struggling with nakedness on various levels for a long time. As a species we crave intimacy and the freedom of nudity, but yet, reject it at the same time. It is a confusing state of liberation and expression coupled with shame and sheepish uncertainty at the same time. It simply does not make sense.

The freedom and uninhibited joy I felt that day was so innocent and love driven. I was glowing and floating for days after. I smile just thinking about it. I don't have to stand in a grove of Redwoods to feel that way. If ever my levels of confidence begin to drop from anything less than a goddess state, I simply remember the Redwoods, just as they stand tall, proud, bare, I can as well.  In front of a mirror, truly look at myself, acknowledge myself, and tell myself 'I am beautiful.'

Try it.

Miley Cyrus + Jackie Chan + Monkey Gods = Yoga fun

Up at 6AM in San Francisco after a sleepless night, too excited to actually sleep. Is it because Santa came to town? No. It's because Yoga Journal Live came to town. As I walked through the hotel lobby, I'm nothing but eyes and teeth. My eyes were wide with enthusiasm and a smile so big it took up my entire face. I was instantly at home as I was greeted by a sea of tie-dye, mala beads, tapestries, local organic samples, and yoga products galore. My feet started an almost involuntary dancelike movement thanks to the beats DJ Drez was spinning. The upbeat electric mantra tunes flooded my ears as I walked through the marketplace to soak it all in. Even the smells were divine, lavender and sage tickled my nostrils. I took a deep luxurious breath in followed by a long sweet exhale, I was in heaven!

I didn't have time to stop for a coffee, but I didn’t need it. Kathryn Budig's “Sun Solutions” workshop ended up being more energizing than my usual venti quad soy mocha latte. She taught creative and new ways to amp up traditional Sun Salutations. Her class was more fun than I could have possibly imagined, almost whimsical. Bundled in one exceptionally cute package, the energy she exudes is infectious, her practice incredibly inspiring, and she moves like a performer in a defying gravity act. She somehow managed to get a full room, upwards of 70 yogis, to twerk like Miley Cyrus before at 8am! Comparing the twerking action of the hip hinge to the range of motion experienced when floating in a pike position from Adho Mukha Svasana (Downward facing dog) to Uttanasana (forward fold) actually helped!

Typically, if I can’t find time to take a yoga class at my local studio, I'll roll out my Manduka and turn on one of Kathryn's online classes featured on Yogaglo. Now, that I have witnessed and experienced her class first hand, I am even more hooked. I'm not even afraid to admit that I have a total girl crush on her. Lucky for me, I still had 2 fabulous workshops to take with her.

Next up on my agenda: “Kick Your Feet Up,” a workshop on arm balances, my absolute favorite variety of yoga poses. Not only did she give detailed explanations and precise alignment cues to demystify the balancing act necessary for Bakasana (crow pose), Kathryn also shared clever and imaginative new variations and transitions useful when arm balancing. Some fun new tricks were sprinkled in there, like Hot Crossed Buns and Baby Crow. As we kicked our feet up we ditched the twerking Miley and invited the ninja Jackie Chan into our practice. Just as Jackie Chan shows his fearlessness in his pre-fight stance by bracing his biceps by his side, elbows bent, forearms out with fists clenched, we did the same. This was her playful way of getting us to really fire up the serratus anterior muscles needed for the stable, strong, and solid foundation required as you lift off into the lightness that is accessible in arm balances.

The hours flew by and it was time for my last workshop of the weekend, journeying down the “Highway to Hamstrings.” Kathryn was well aware at this point that 90% of us were sleepy yogis, who actually belonged in a restorative-hug-a-bolster-workshop. I was no exception, I would have hugged a bolster so hard at that point...alas, I had some work to do.  My hamstrings and I rarely have good days together, especially since experiencing a deep hamstring injury last summer. I was there to strengthen my biggest weakness and to create a healthy relationship with those hammies. A piece of our inner ninja, Jackie Chan, remained with us as we called upon the great deity Hanuman, our inner monkey god. My vision was complete with a bright cape as my monkey king flew across oceans to save the damsel in distress. The damsel in my case was my ego. Prepping for the flying monkey pose, Hanumanasana (splits), is no monkey business. Kathryn managed to make me smile, even as I felt confronted and tight in this magnificent leaping display, that conjured up all the flexibility and strength I could possibly manage.

As the weekend event was winding down, I was overwhelmed and consumed with such deep gratitude and a profound feeling of love that flooded my entire being.  Love for myself, my yoga practice, and for life in general. My physical body was spent and sore all over, but I felt free, light, and uplifted from surrounding myself with people who came together for their greatest good and shared the healing practice of yoga.

It's official! I joined the band of devotees that follow the darling yogi goddess, Kathryn Budig. I crave to continue learning from her. If you have never taken a class from her, or if you have never heard her name before this post, please do yourself a solid favor and Google her name. Immediately. She is as real as it gets. She makes yoga accessible, and applies the age-old fundamental philosophies into a context that is new, fresh, fun, and modern.

Fortunately, for us Los Angelinos, she happens to be back in LA to teach some classes at Yogaglo in early February (and again for Yoga Journal’s San Diego conference). I can't wait to pop into them. The intensive workshops empowered my practice, cleared my mind, gave me confidence, the effects struck me so deep, I even felt it on a cellular level. I know it will do the same for you. Hope to see you there!

Namaste

Food porn

My dear friend Kendra is a magician in the Kitchen. She runs an organic, healthy, and convenient food delivery service called Vibrant Palate. With farmers market fresh produce, local and organic meat, and a lot of love, this woman crafts colorful and nutritious allergy free meals. She not only whips up lunches, snacks, and dinners, she also packages them, and hand delivers them to her clients. If you are someone who is looking for a way to eat healthier, love home cooked meals, but can't find the time to cook, and want to shy away from going out to eat so often you should really look into her services. I recently had the pleasure of seeing her dance around her kitchen as she put together a sampling of her menu offerings for me to photograph.
Here is an idea of what to expect when you subscribe to her services.  These beautiful and vibrant dishes will be fresh and ready to sink your teeth into....

Black bean burgers topped with pineapple avocado salsa and romesco sauce

Grilled organic chicken marinated and slathered in mint sauce with a side of haricot verts and slivered almonds

Roasted squash stuffed with couscous, red pepper, raisin, fresh herbs and sprinkled with walnuts and spices paired with a side salad

I don't know about you, but I'm hungry and craving these delightful plates just looking at them!
Check out her website Vibrant Palate to have a gander at the other goodies she offers.
